With a staff of more than 7,500 people in more than 90 offices worldwide, Bovis Lend Lease says it is a leader in project management and construction services. Based in Millers Point, Australia, the company strives to create high-quality property assets through its operations on six continents.
The firm’s roots go back to 1885, when founder Charles William Bovis purchased a building business in London. “It was the beginning of a business odyssey that developed into the internationally renowned construction and project management company known today as Bovis Lend Lease,” the company says.
Although the firm changed owners in 1908, it kept the Bovis name and was a family run business until 1974. That year, the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. purchased the operation. Under its leadership, Bovis became a construction, homebuilding, civil engineering and property conglomerate that completed projects throughout the United Kingdom.
During the 1980s, Bovis set out to establish an international presence. “Through acquisition and organic growth, the company expanded into the U.S.A. and continental Europe, then later into Asia and Australia,” it says. “The result was a business with both global and local capabilities.”
Today, Bovis is a subsidiary of Lend Lease Corp. and provides services that are tailored to its customers’ needs. “Our services can be harnessed collectively to provide an integrated real estate solutions offer,” Bovis says. “Alternatively, they are delivered on a stand-alone basis, in a range of contract types that span the risk/return spectrum.”
One market where Bovis excels is healthcare. “[We] offer our clients specialist skills in the design, project management and construction of healthcare facilities,” the company says. “Our experience gives us an in-depth understanding of the unique challenges involved in healthcare developments.”
Because of these challenges, “We are sensitive to regulatory requirements and procedures, and can help clients approach the approval process with confidence,” Bovis says. “We have the expertise to protect ongoing medical operations in adjoining areas, and we work with the hospital teams to phase work carefully, ensuring that patient care can continue without interruption.”
The firm is bringing that expertise to its latest project for the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, which it has served since 2001. Bovis is managing the construction of a 100,000-square-foot, six-story in-patient building for the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park.
“The 152-bed facility, which will link to the main hospital, will feature a pediatric emergency department, pediatric medical/surgical unit, pediatric surgery center and a pediatric intensive care unit,” Bovis says. The project is aiming for completion in April 2013.
Its second floor will feature the emergency department, which will be the region’s first dedicated, stand-alone pediatric emergency department. Bovis notes that it will include child-sized medical equipment, family friendly waiting rooms, 37 bays, two trauma rooms and two radiology suites.
With operations in Australia, Asia, America and Europe, Lend Lease says it has earned a long and successful track record by building iconic structures. “Founded in 1958, the group was born out of a vision to create a company that could successfully combine four disciplines: property, financing, development and investment,” the company says.
Today, “We are committed to creating and building innovative and sustainable solutions, forging partnerships and delivering strong investment returns,” it says. “Sustainability has been an integral part of our future.
“Through design and investment in new technologies, we are committed to delivering the next generation of sustainable property and infrastructure solutions,” the company says. “We are committed to being incident- and injury-free. This philosophy extends to employees, partners, clients, suppliers and subcontractors.”
